SUPP – Stampin: Keadaan mampu ubah keputusan pengundi.

In Barisan Nasional, Pilihan Raya Umum, Politik, SUPP on April 8, 2012 at 12:04 am

Party has slim chance of retaining Stampin in general election, reckons Kota Sentosa vice-chief
– The Star Sarawak –

KUCHING: The parliamentary election is poised to take place anytime now, yet a shadow of a doubt remains on whether SUPP can still retain its hold as to the Stampin seat.

Kota Sentosa SUPP vice-chairman Lo Khere Chiang puts it straight that chances of the party losing the seat is still high based on voting trends in the last state election.

“I would say the chances of losing (Stampin) is higher than winning. But having said this, it gives all the more reason for SUPP and the Barisan Nasional on the whole to work harder and convince the people that we can do the job and serve them well,” he told reporters when on a site visit to Taman Flora Indah here yesterday.

Lo, who is speculated to replace Stampin incumbent Datuk Yong Khoon Seng, said despite the Barisan doing its best, the people would not be easily “satisfied”.

As such, he believed there would be no way around this except to pull through harder than before by addressing major issues like transparency and fairness in education, jobs and management of resources.

“No doubt, Sarawak is still better than many other countries and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has been sincerely trying to bring in the necessary changes.

“Even doctors are getting better pay nowadays — an initiative taken to retain them here. In the end, we need to realise that Barisan is the only one who can maintain the stability in the country because that is what it’s already been doing for over 50 years. And the Barisan is changing. It has become more open,” he said.

Lo said despite the opposition winning all the state seats under the Stampin parliamentary constituency, record showed that around 40% of the voters still chose Barisan.

This, he said, meant that there was still a major fraction of constituents who wanted Barisan representation.

Commenting on speculations concerning him as a candidate for the polls, Lo admitted that his name was among those proposed to stand in for Stampin.

He believed that Yong’s name had also been submitted despite the latter’s refusal to seek re-election this time round.

“To me personally, Datuk Yong is still the best candidate for the job. Leadership resonates from him because he knows how to groom the young blood.

“That’s the quality of a leader,” Lo said. Nevertheless, he pointed out that the end decision would lie with the party’s top leadership.
